About Us
Stock Sweepers, From Humble Beginnings
Stock Sweepers was founded in 1998. Our family business was created to recondition and remount used road sweeping equipment onto new chassis, specifically for our own operated hire fleet. Word about our work spread fast, and quickly the business grew into the UK’s premier company for remounting truck mounted sweepers.
2009 – Into a New Era
10 long years of dismantling and rebuilding worn sweeping equipment taught us many things about road sweepers. We learnt that there were common weaknesses found on many of the existing machines available on the market. We believed that one day we could overcome these weaknesses, and that we could build a better, longer-lasting machine with a much greater life span than the existing manufacturers. In 2009, we launched two new robust sweepers: the S6400 and S8400. Utilising the latest British road sweeping technologies available to us, and remaining focused on maximum life span, we used top quality components to make sure our machines were designed to last up to 20 years with regular care and sensible maintenance.
Today
Our sweepers are now available in many different countries in North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. We remain true to our vision, which is building quality machines that have the longest working life achievable and minimum down time for our customers. Our mission will never be to sell the most number of sweepers; it’s to build the best sweeper possible.
1990
Sweepers were not the starting point in business for our MD, Jeff Stock. He began his career as an owner driver of a JCB 3CX in Wrotham, Kent. Working hard in the counstruction industry, it was whilst building crash barriers on the M20 that Jeff came into contact with road sweepers. They came after building work was completed to clear the carriageways, and it was seeing this that sparked his interest and resulted in a little more digging around into the world of sweepers.
1991
Following some advice from a fellow contractor, Jeff decided there was an opportunity to be had and alongside his business partner, bought his first road sweeper.
“We had never had a road sweeper before” said Jeff “We didn’t even know how to put the brushes down”.
This problem was quickly solved when the retired father of a freind offered to drive the sweeper for them if they found the work.
1995
The fleet was added to over the years with vehicles being purchased second hand and refurbished, Jeff’s knowledge of heavy vehicles came in handy during this time.
Eventually a further 11 vehicles were added to the fleet and Stocks Sweepers Hire was born. Once bought and reconditioned, the sweepers were hired out to local authorities and private sector companies.
“It was this experience that has directly led to where Stock Sweepers are now” said Jeff.
“Doing all that maintanance, stripping the vehicles down, remounting them; it taught us everything we know about how sweepers are build, how they work and more importantly why they stop working.”
1996
Back in 1996 whilst operating a fleet of road sweepers, Jeff Stock, Managing Director of Stock Sweepers, fitted an early version to one of his machines. Already, the design was superior to anything that was currently available – the intake tubes entered the underside of the body rather than the rear door, the design met the requirements of the changing underrun regulations at the time and has been adopted by many other manufacturers since.
1997
Doing all that work also allowed them to see how the vehicles could be built better, how the maintenance could be made easier and how they could be engineered from the start to make them more efficient and robust with a longer life span.
With this information in hand, the hire side of the business was sold and the business focused its efforts into refurbishing, refitting and supplying sweepers nationwide, eventually becoming one of the UK’s top companies for reconditioning used road sweeper equipment.
1998
The development of the business did not stop there. With our extensive knowledge of refurbishing and operating sweepers manufacturing sweepers was the next logical step.
“We were fully refurbishing and remounting vehicles and using our own in-house engineered parts – if you considered the whole machine, we were actually producing a high percentage of it ourselves,” said Jeff.
“All we had to do now was engineer our own body shell and we could produce a 100% new machine, fully designed, engineered and manufactured by Stock Sweepers.”
So In 1998, that’s excactly what we did.
Our mission from the very start was to produce a machine with the longest working life achieveable, thus minimising downtime for our customers.
Additionally, during this time Stock Sweepers were working on the first prototype for a full-width rear suction machine, the first to have the intake tubes enter the underside of the body rather than the rear door. This design met the requirements of the changing underrun regulations at the time and has been adopted by many manufacturers since.
2009
Stock Sweepers aquires a new site to assist with the high demand for new machines. This also marks the launch of the brand new S6400 & S8400 lineup which are still in operation to this day.
2012
Stock Sweepers are granted patent for the tempest leaf blower system.
The system is the most effective method of removing leaves in rural/semi-rural conditions. It blows leaves off roads and footpaths into verges in one pass.
2016
Stock Sweepers debut the “Worlds First” Hydrogen powered road sweepers.
See the write up below:
“Gloucestershire-based manufacturer Stock Sweepers is fitting autonomous electrolysers to their vehicles, so that councils across the country can meet and exceed their clean air targets. Managing Director Jeff Stock made the announcement following the launch of the hydrogen-powered system, which not only reduces emissions, but also increases fuel efficiency by approximately 30%.
“We have been working to create a system which is truly ground-breaking.” said Jeff.
“Our sweepers not only have the advanced technology to make our roads cleaner, but now the environment will be cleaner too.”
“This is a world’s first and it’s happening right here in Great Britain.”
The hydrogen-powered system has been produced following seven years of development supported by the European Union and The University of Sheffield.
